SUMMARY FOR OUR ENGLISH-SPEAKING VISITORS

The Rotary-Club of Arbois-Poligny-Salins was chartered in

1963. To date (July 2006), we have 26active members,

including one charter member. We also have one honorary

member. Eleven of our present members are PHFs, including

six multiple PHFs (three with one saphire, two with two

saphires and one with three). In addition the wife of one

of our members is also a PHF.

Club member PDG Paul-Henri Lombard was the first governor

of District 1680 when it was reorganised in 1995-96.

The three communities that give their name to the club have

a total population of about 12,000 and are situated in the

Jura administrative division of France, about 70 miles

North of the Swiss city of Geneva and 250 miles South-East

of Paris, the capital of France. Arbois is the central of

the three communities, with Poligny about 6 miles to the

South and Salins 8 miles to the North-East. The Jura

department belongs to the ancient province of Franche Comté

which, with Alsace, makes up Rotary District 1680

(2005-2006 Governor is Claude Sarric of the RC

Ingwiller-Bouxwiller-La Petite Pierre).

Claude Jourdant (classification: Architect (Rtd) is 2006-2007

club president.

One of our projects in the past, complemented by the Rotary

Foundation, through Matching Grants has been providing

prosthetic material for a leper hospital in the Ivory

Coast. We also provided hearing aids for a school for the

deaf in Abidjan. In 2003 we finalised a project to

establish a cheese factory in Croatia, and we provided a

computer for a local physical rehabilitation centre.

One of our members is a Rotary Volunteer and, as such, he

travels to Madagascar to help with the establishment of an

orphanage. He has also taken there large quantities of

equipment for schools and charities collected by our club.

In 2002 we sent a young girl to India within the framework

of the "Youth Exchange" programme and received a student

from Western Australia. In 2004 one of our members led a

GSE team from the District to District 2280 in Central

Norway and another in Australia (D 9810), and in June 2005 we hosted the return Norwegian team during their stay in the South of Franche-Comté. We also hosted the teamfrom "Down Under"

We are twinned with Wolfach RC in Germany and Grenchen RC

in Switzerland. We visit them in alternate years and

vice-versa. Members of the Wolfach club were with us for

our centenary celebration this year.

We very much value the fellowship provided by Rotary and it

is always with pleasure that we meet every Thursday at

7.45pm for our aperitif (1st Thursday) or dinner (other

Thursdays). The venue is normally at the 'La Finette'

restaurant in Arbois.
